O bilinguismo amplia a capacidade perceptiva e adia a demência

Novo idioma é um estímulo para o cérebro

Foram apresentados vários estudos sobre o tema das jornadas «O que nos diz o bilinguismo sobre o nosso cérebro?», organizadas pela Associação Americana para o Avanço nas Ciências (American Association for the Advancement of Science), em Washington, que demonstram que saber duas línguas não gera confusão no cérebro. Pelo contrário, amplia a capacidade perceptiva.

Uma das investigações, realizadas por María Teresa Bajo e Pedro Macizo, da Universidade de Granada, consistiu em medir o tempo de resposta da actividade cerebral perante uma pergunta, dirigida a voluntários que dominavam o espanhol e o inglês de igual forma. Os investigadores verificaram que os bilingues são capazes de activar ambos os idiomas, ao mesmo tempo, mesmo em situações em que apenas necessitem uma língua.

Segundo um comunicado da instituição, o bilinguismo permite melhorar a atenção e a memória das pessoas, já que a treina como se de uma ginástica mental se tratasse. Segundo os avanços da investigadora Nùria Sebastián-Gallés, da Universidade Pompeu Fabra de Barcelona, por exemplo, crianças bilingues, de quatro a oito meses conseguem distinguir entre dois idiomas que não conhecem.
